What would we do without denim?

This practical material, originally used for workwear, is such a wardrobe staple we can't imagine life without it.

From jeans to shorts and shirts to skirts, there's not an item of clothing that doesn't benefit from being recreated in denim. Even denim bikinis have a place in our hearts.

And this season the denim trends are better than ever...

You know that feeling when you find the perfect pair of jeans? It almost feels life-changing. 

Well this pair of mid-rise, straight jeans by River Island (above left) could be the ones. The trend for straight leg denim has been around for a while, replacing skinnies as THE jeans to be seen in.

In 100% cotton, these beauties will keep their shape and can be dressed up or down with ease.

Or base your look around another huge trend that's made its way back from the early 2000s - the denim maxi skirt. V by Very's take (above right) has a cool raw hem and a figure-hugging fit and thanks to added stretch will move with you, not against you.

Spring days mean we can say goodbye to our heavy winter coats, wearing lighter jackets instead. And this belted longline denim jacket by Barbour International (above left) is the dream. This slightly retro look is everywhere right now and this jacket will work over fine knits and tees and is perfect for festival season too.

Sharp tailoring

There's something innately cool about a woman wearing a trouser suit.

When building a capsule wardrobe we highly recommend investing in a well cut pinstripe shirt like this one (above left). And in the spirit of borrowing from the boys, buy it a couple of sizes too big, imagining you've woken up at your boyfriend's place and have insouciantly pulled on one of his shirts. Ultra-chic.

Light knits

We love a thick chunky knit as much as anyone but when the time comes to pack them away until winter, we're always more than ready.

For a touch of sleek elegance try this navy knit by Fig & Basil (below left). The V-neck and split hem work to accentuate the waist and it's one of those tops that'll take you from your desk to dinner with just a change of jewellery.
